Letterboxing 101

A couple of summers ago I stumbled upon a fun summer activity with the kids - Letterboxing! Similar to geocaching but without the high tech GPS gear. Letterboxers hide small, weatherproof boxes in publicly-accessible places (like parks) and post clues to finding the box online on one of several Web sites. There are close to 20,000 hidden in North America alone! Individual letterboxes usually contain a log book and a rubber stamp(very often hand-carved). Finders make an imprint of the letterbox's stamp on their personal log book, and leave an imprint of their personal stamp on the letterbox's logbook . It originated in England but grew in popularity on this side of the pond after this 1998 article in Smithsonian Magazine.

Here’s the basic idea: Someone hides a waterproof box somewhere outside; it should contain at least a notebook and a carved rubber stamp (it may also include a pen, stamp pad or other small treasures). The hider writes directions to the box (called “clues” or “the map”) and gives them to the finder in person, by mail or online. Clues range from easy to challenging. The hike may be short or long, geared towards novices or advanced hikers of any age.

Find a list of letterboxes online here

Letterboxing with kids is a fun way to discover new places and to explore nature close to home. Once you find the letterbox, stamp the letterbox’s stamp in your notebook, and stamp your stamp in the letterbox’s “logbook”.

Letterboxing has no official rules but rather asks you to use some common sense...

“Leave no trace” - i.e., leave the area as is or in better shape (e.g., by removing litter.)

Reseal the box so contents are protected from the elements.

Replace it in its original location so it is completely hidden from view, to avoid spoiling the fun or making it vulnerable to vandals.

Above all - get outside in the fresh air with your kids and try something new!

March Madness - downhill style!

Yesterday we celebrated our own version of March Madness at our local ski area. A number of fun activities were planned that provided entertainment for one & all....

First, there were the costumes...

then the cardboard box sleds for the derby....

yes...CARDBOARD boxes! Can you believe some of the designs...amazing and so fun to watch fly down the hill. The grand finale - at least for us - was the award ceremony where Little Man won the 1st place trophy for the race series for boys 6 & under! He was SO excited!! He actually took off the tutu to get his trophy!

mm15

one more event before the day was done - skiing over the slush pond....one of the 1st to go was Little Man's 7 year old friend!

mm16

she scored big on the style points! So the season ends. It was a lot of fun - no better way to pass a wintry day than with friends & family on the slopes! Already looking forward to next season!

Halloween Fun!

phew....what a day yesterday was! I have been so busy sewing for my show on the 7th that I left Halloween costumes until Halloween day...maybe I was secretly hoping they would spot something at the store that they wanted to be & I could BUY them a costume instead....only Eily bit a bit on that one...opting on Thursday to be a DJ rather than a witch.

so the final sewing tally yesterday was....completed 25 tutus....made 3 pairs of knit pants for halloween costumes...2 capes..1 tunic & 1 beard!

Leo went as a viking....aaarrrghhhh!!! (or is that what a pirate says???)

and Klem...bless his heart...went as a character from one of his favorite book series..Rangers Apprentice. I loved that at 11 years old he still wanted to dress up & really got into his character. e is snuggled up on the couch in his cape as I type watching saturday morning cartoons....that alone is worth the energy put into the costumes yesterday!

Ain't she sweet............

We bought E her first sewing machine about a year and a half ago...I gave her a few lessons but the interest was not really there....until this week

she designed & sewed all on her own a top that doubles as an apron with a big pocket on the front! She also made her 1st stripwork skirt that still needs to be hemmed.

It has been so fun having her sitting next to me on her machine while I sew away on mine.....to have her understand my passion and embrace it is a powerful feeling indeed.
